The topic of religion, of dong religion better, might be the hardest one, because it's so ingrained in each of us, either our own religion, or chosing to not have one, it's one of the biggest "I'm right, you're wrong" in human history. And I will both say that we've all gotten it right and we've all gotten it wrong. I'm going to try to take a non-demoninational perspective on religion, because I don't believe that a God, by definition, can be divisive or for a singular group of people on one planet. But I can't deny that my background is Christianity, specifically American Baptist. My mom was a preacher's kid, her two brothers became preachers, and one of her sisters married a preacher; several of my cousins became preachers. My dad also grew up in a Christian, American Baptist home. And though I will absolutely not deny Jesus, I won't push Him, as there are several points in history where the nearly exact same story takes place....which further proves my below points of a Universal God. God, by whatever word in whatever language, is always defined as infinite. As the Creator of all that is, was, and ever shall be. As far as Judeo-Christian and Islamic religions go, the historical vision of God is the same. Both groups of religions worship the same God, the God of Abraham. "Allah" is simply the Arabic word for "god." It's not a name, in the same way "god" is not a name, but is a title. Allah is a title, in the Arabic language. And that's one of the most controversial things that can be said, that contradicts what so many in both groups have believed for these past 1700 years, or 3700ish years if we go back to Abraham, and his separation from Lot....That split was the cause of the divide between the Jews and the Muslims. It goes back to who took which side of the river. But there are stories dating back even prior, from Egyptian texts, that have stories covering very similar "plot points" as what the Bible ascribed to Jesus. |
